|Calibre Mining Corp. & Ascenta Foundation Medical Mission February 25 to 28th, 2013|
Calibre Mining Corp. was excited and very proud to partner with the Ascenta Foundation to conduct a four day medical mission in the community of Riscos de Oro in Northeast Nicaragua from February 25th to the 28th, 2013.
The Ascenta Foundation is a registered charitable organization based out of Vancouver, B.C. that focuses on the promotion of health and well-being by providing urgent medical, dental, optometric and surgical services to communities in medically underserved communities. They aim to empower these communities through health education on prevention, treatment and nutrition.
After months of preparation, a group of over 60 local and international volunteers, including Medical Doctors, Dentists, Optometrists, Nurses, and local aids oversaw the consultation and treatment of 2,090 local patients consisting largely of women, children, and the elderly. Many of the patients had never received any medical attention in their lives, some travelled for many miles to get to Riscos, while some individuals arrived at the Mission with wounds from accidents occurring the morning of the event. Still other patients were rushed immediately to hospital for further treatment of more advanced illnesses (such as pneumonia) after a consultation at the Mission. We also understand that the Foundation plans to follow-up on some cases including some young infants with cleft lips in need of surgical attention, whose families' could not afford the surgery without outside financial assistance.
With the logistical support of Calibre, the Foundation and its volunteers were able to successfully:
- Administer vision screenings and provide hundreds of prescription eyeglasses to those in need;
- Distribute over $20,000 worth of medications to the people in the community;
- Provide education on hand-washing, dental hygiene, and prenatal care, including vitamins and minerals;
- Provide families and individuals with much needed family packs which contained items such as topical creams, band aids, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and soap; and
- Provide much needed medical consultation to an area that was otherwise underserved.
Calibre recognizes that in order to operate in different jurisdictions around the world that we need to develop our "social license". The social license is developed through the adoption of best practices and operating procedures that reflect health, safety and environmental concerns of local governments and communities. We are committed to understanding and implementing these best practices wherever we may work.
